What does your nervous system have to do with Chiropractic?

Posted on 2012-04-24 12:05:13

Your nervous system is composed of your brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves that exit your spine.  The peripheral nerves essentially send signals back and forth from the brain to the rest of your body, including your muscles, organs (heart, lungs, liver, etc) and just about every tissue in your body.

If there is any type of interference as the nerves exit your spine due to spinal mis-alignments (subluxations), this can create a wide variety of problems such as localized pain, soreness, irregularity, and weakness.  If the nerves that supply your organs are affected it's much harder to notice because organ dis-function often is asymptomatic or takes years to develop symptoms.  Spinal mis-alignments and pressure on spinal nerves has been associated with abnormal heart function, respiratory function and even glucose metabolism.

Visit our 3D spine simulator to see how your spinal nerves affect your body.

Chiropractors identify spinal segments that are out of alignment an correct them so that your body can function without interference.  Waiting for PAIN to bring you to the chiropractor, is like waiting for pain in your teeth to brush your teeth.

If it's been more than a month since your last chiropractic spinal check, call for an appointment today.  Your body will thank you.

If you have any questions about how chiropractic can help you, please call our Santa Monica Chiropractic office for an appointment.  If you are too far from us, please contact your local chiropractor.

When should you see a chiropractor vs. an MD?

Posted on 2012-04-06 15:09:34

Chiropractic care is still nothing but a "bad word" to many people and traditional western doctors (MDs).

More often than I would like to report, my patients take my advise and then say "but I have to check with my doctor first".

Chiropractors ARE doctors.  We just have different tools for helping patients at different stages of their conditions. When it comes to musculo-skeletal conditions such as neck or back pain, and in my experience chiropractors will usually perform a much better examination than most MDs.

I'm venting today because yesterday I had a patient come to the office after seeing several MDs who did nothing but shuffle her to "the next" doctor and ordered MRIs.  Her initial complaint was of neck and shoulder pain so her pain management doctor ordered a neck MRI. According to them the MRI showed a pinched nerve in the neck therefore they diagnosed her with a cervical radiculopathy, gave her oral steroids AND a pain medication (which unbeknownst to her turned out to be an antidepressant that is used also for chronic pain).

After getting no relief, and after having to stop her medication because it was negatively affecting her mood and ability to think, she was referred to me by her son.

I took  a history of what happened I did an orthopedic and neurologic examination.  I found that she actually had a shoulder problem, likely impingement syndrome or a labral tear, and if she did have a pinched nerve in her neck, it had nothing to do with her shoulder problem.

What boggled me the most was that I couldn't understand why anyone would order a neck MRI after having done a neck and shoulder examination, because it made no sense to me, so I asked her if her doctors had done an actual physical examination.  She said that all they did was talk to her and ordered an MRI! This is at least two MDs who failed to perform a basic orthopedic examination, therefore wasting time, resources and failing to refer the patient to the appropriate doctor and for the right imaging.

So, when is better to see a chiropractor than an MD?  Pretty much anytime you are having musculo-skeletal pain CHIROPRACTORS  are your best choice.  MDs are great at other things, such as saving your lives if you get shot, or have a major infection, or need surgery.

And please don't get me wrong, I have nothing against MDs.  In fact, I believe in working hand in hand with them whenever possible to ensure the best outcome for the patient.  But the trust that the average person puts on another human just because they wear a white coat and they are called MDs vs. Chiropractors is ridiculous.

I hope if you are reading this you will think twice as to who your next doctor should be when it comes to headaches, neck pain, back pain and most other physical type injuries.

L.A. Marathon SPECIAL OFFER

Posted on 2012-03-17 12:08:05

If you are not aware, this Sunday, several thousand people will run 26.2 miles from Dodger Stadium to Santa Monica!  That means lots of road closures and traffic jams.

What it also means is that people will be performing a feat that deserves attention.  Endurance training takes time, and the changes that occur in the body are simply amazing!  From increased red blood cells to increased capacity of red blood cells to carry oxygen to the muscles: increased mytochondria within each cell to be able to generate more energy to increased carrier molecules within each cell to be able to absorb more glucose to be used for energy.  Simply AMAZING!

But the changes come with countless hours of training, perseverance and good old sweat!

We at Bay Chiropractic salute you and would like to reward you!  If you are an existing patient who is running the marathon, you will receive 50% OFF any number of visits during the week of March 19th-24th.  If you know any new patients that could use a tune up, they will receive 50% OFF their initial visit as well.  BUT, you must bring your MEDAL to prove you made it!

We look forward to seeing you all soon!

Crossfit, Chiropractic & Health

Posted on 2012-03-06 11:06:03

Crossfit is the latest craze in fitness.  Everybody knows somebody who is doing it.  You've seen it in commercials on TV, and you might have even hear of the 7-minute burpees, kettlebell swings and kipping pull ups.

Recently the crossfit games began, so crossfit is on everybody's radar.  If you want to watch some amazing athletes, just check their webpage (link above).   You will be amazed.

Now, what you might have not heard is the huge number of injuries that happen from people overdoing it in crossfit.  So, if you are thinking about joining a crossfit class, please do the following to ensure that you protect yourself against injury.

  1.  Start slow - do what you can and no more.  Strength and endurance will build overtime.  Men: Yes, some 90 pound women will be able to lift more than you.  Deal with it.
  2. Listen to your body - pain is your body's way of telling you to stop. If you ignore it, you will end up at a doctors office.
  3. Be realistic, some people will not be able to do some exercises due to prior injuries.  Respect your limits and do what you can.
  4. Have fun.  If it's not fun, it's not worth it.

In Santa Monica and West Los Angeles there are plenty of place to train, and most will offer you free class so you can check it out:

Dr Eric is the best. He has helped me so many times. Being an M.D, I know a little something about the human body. Dr Eric has repeatedly impressed me with his ability to diagnose the underlying cause of my injuries and to treat them. I totally recommend him.
